Deena Brecher

Deena has been the clinical nurse specialist in the emergency department at the Nemours/Alfred I. duPont hospital for the last 7 years. In this role she has worked to advance nursing processes through the use of evidence based practice and also by applying the scope and standards of emergency nursing. An Emergency Nurses Association (ENA) member since she became a nurse, Deena has always understood that emergency nursing is where she belongs. She is serving as the 2012 Secretary/Treasurer on the ENA National Board of Directors. She is committed to pediatric emergency nursing, recognizing it is a subspecialty of emergency nursing with a unique skill set. She advocated for a certification exam which validated this skill set and was integral to the development of the Certified Pediatric Emergency Nurse exam.

Deena is a certified TeamSTEPPS Master Trainer with experience in in-situ coaching. As a result of her years in pediatric emergency nursing and her commitment to advancing the practice of nursing, several honors and special recognition have come Deena’s way. In 2008 she received the Nemours nursing “Image of Nursing” award. In 2004 she received the Micromedix/ENAF Best Nursing Abstract Award for her abstract titled “The Reliability and Validity of the Emergency Severity Index in the Pediatric Population”. At the 2009 ENA Annual Meeting, she was part of the Delaware Emergency Nurses Association Education Committee which received the National Team Award for their work educating emergency nurses in Delaware and surrounding states.

Deena graduated from the Center for Emergency Medicine in Western Pennsylvania in 1994 with a certificate in Prehospital Emergency Medicine; in 1997 she earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Pittsburgh. In 2004 Deena earned her Master of Science from the University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston as an Emergency Care Clinical Nurse Specialist.
